The offshore run by the partyboat Capt. John began about half an hour after leaving Galveston's Pier 19. Capt. Johnny Williams had us headed in a sort of southerly direction and the area's rock formations in around 100 ft. of water, about 60 miles offshore. Seas were 3-4 ft. at the start of the offshore ride, noon and beyond, it was 2 ft. or less.

The 67 of us fishermen worked our baits of cut squid or whole Spanish sardines from the near surface area to the bottom. Most of the red snapper limit catch was taken from the bottom to about 20 ft. above it. The red snapper portion of our catch contained over 30 of 9 to 14 pounds, and 3 were in the 16 to 18# class. Our total catch ws made up of:

134 red snapper to 18#, a boat limit
16 lane snapper
1 vermilion
1 30# stingray, released
4 sharpnose shark
5 kingfish to 28 lbs.
1 ling of 30 lbs.
8 sandtrout
6 bluerunner
1 bonito
1 porgy

Some of the individual catches:
Steve Saur headed up a group of five professors from Beaumont's Lamar University, including Michael Sullivan, Chang Hisien Lin, Eric Bronson and Jim Mann. Their red snapper limits went to 14#. Eric also had a sharpnose shark...they all passed the red snapper test.
Gino, Kat & Gino Asuncion,Jr., from Galveston, had red snapper limits topped by Gino's 18 pounder. He also had the 28# kingfish.
Patrick Lemire, Texas City - my red snapper limit was made up of 14 and 17 pounders that hit Carolina rigged Spanish sardines and squid combo, fished just below the mid-depths.

Fishing report readers will remember names such as Richardson or Marigliano and Rita Baumann. Well, Steve Saur is another of those you need to meet when fishing the Capt John. He's another of the great folks you can fish with. Ask if he's aboard when you go, and look him up. Speaking of "going"...if catching red snapper is your plan, you need to be "going" soon, as there's now only 17 more days for the red snapper fishery in Federal waters this year. Come by the Capt John office at Galveston's Pier 19 or give the office staff a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. Red snapper time is running out -- don't delay, call today!

The partyboat Capt. John's offshore fishing trip today was run to the area about 50 miles to the SE of Galveston. While Capt. Johnny Williams put the 80 fishermen on another great total catch. The fishing highlight had to be Coby Keziah catching his 24# African pompano when fishing at a production platform. He was out with his dad, brothers and other family members. The trip was for Coby's 8th birthday. Of the things an eight year old might forget, it's a safe bet his catch today won't be one of them.

The calm Gulf made the using of their cut squid or Spanish sardine baits a lot easier. Fished throughout the 120 ft. water column at several rock formations and a production platform, those baits produced this multi-species catch which included a red snapper limit for all 80 fishermen:

160 red snapper to 17#, a boat limit
31 lane snapper
4 vermilion snapper
1 mangrove snapper
1 triggerfish
1 Atlantic spadefish
45 bluefish
4 rainbow runner
3 African pompano of 20, 24 and 37#
2 kingfish
46 bluerunner
1 sharpnose shark
1 ling, 26#

Chris Keziah, Santa Fe; the group of 7 had red snapper limits to 5#, vermilion snapper and Coby's 24# African pompano. This was a day none of the seven will forget.
Jim Marigliano, Dallas; Today brought to a close his run of 12 consecutive days of offshore fishing on the Capt. John. His catch, taken on lightly weighted Carolina rigged Spanish sardines, was made up of a red snapper limit to 17#, the 26# ling and the 37# African pompano. What a finish for his 12 day fishing marathon...he's the Capt. John's "Lance Armstrong", so to speak.

The photos of Coby and Jim show that a first timer and a regular alike can share in the excitement of offshore fishing on the partyboat Capt. John. Give the office at Galveston's Pier 19 a call, or come by to make your reservations. The numbers to call are either 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. Don't forget, only 21 days are left for the red snapper fishery in Federal waters to be open for 2009. Remember, it's not just a partyboat, it's the Capt. John! - make the call or come by the office today.
