The area about 50 miles SSE of Galveston was chosen by Capt. Shawn Clark for today's fishing by the 79 fishermen aboard the partyboat Capt. John. Fishing the standard partyboat baits, cut squid or Spanish sardines, throughout the water column, this catch was decked and iced down in the fish boxes:
104 red snapper to 15# 46 lane snapper 12 kingfish 1 Dorado of 14# (mahi-mahi) 5 bluerunner 1 mangrove snapper, 8#
Sammy Arcididiacondo from Galveston had red snapper limit thich includedc the 15 pounder. The clock on this season's red snapper fishery in Federal waters is ticking and the ticks are coming closer together, or so it seems. There's only 12 fishing days left before it closes until sometime around the first of June, 2010.
If you are in the area, drop by the office at Galveston's Pier 19 and make your reservations, or call 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853.

Capt. Shawn Clark headed up today's offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John. The run offshore was to an area of rock formations in 135-140 ft. of water about 65 miles out in sort of a southerly direction.
Species eating the cut squid, sardine or artificial baits offered by the 82 fishermen include:
88 red snapper to 18# 4 lane snapper 22 vermilion snapper 6 kingfish to 20# 2 ling 57 sharpnose shark
The from the Dallas-Ft. worth area was aboard today. Several of their catches were by: Lance Andrews, with a red snapper limit and sharpnose shark. Toby Jackson had a red snapper limit to 6#. Shawn Michie had a red snapper limit that went to 8# and a kingfish. Lance Brown with a red snapper limit and one of the ling. Rob Richardson(Athens),who had the group come on today's trip had a red snapper limit to 10#, a kingfish limit of 2 and sharpnose shark. Mike Richardson(Corinth) had a red snapper limit to 12#, kingfish and sharpnose shark. Colby Smith(Greenville)-Another Richardson recruit - his red snapper limit went to 10#. His kingfish limit went to 20#, the day's heaviest fish and a sharpnose shark.
The red snapper portion of today's catch was a little over half a limit, that's how fishing goes at times. Other species took up the slack, including those hard-hitting, pulling and eating sharpnose sharks. In only 12 more days the red snapper fishery in Federal waters will close for 2009. Don't let the last day and closure sneak up on you if red snapper fishing is of interest to you. Make your reservations, call 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853 for your spot at the rail. Patrick

Some unwelcomed guests were in the area - "Breezy & Bumpy" for today's offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John. They were in the 4 to 5 ft. class, occasionally, a few of their taller relatives were around, too.
The seas today made for an exciting ride to the offshore fishing grounds, an area about 60 miles to the south of Galveston. Capt. Johnny Williams chose those rock formations, in around 115 ft. of water, for the start of today's fishing by the 79 fishermen. On the trip back, a stop was made at a production platform about 45 miles offshore.
Seas were a bit bumpy but it got better when we were offshore about 30 miles, and another multi-species catch came up. The catch included a boat limit of red snapper to 24 lbs. The totals were:
156 red snapper to 24#, a boat limit 3 lane snapper 5 vermilion snapper 2 mangrove snapper 1 triggerfish 1 ling-30# 3 kingfish 1 rainbow runner 1 bonito 2 sharpnose sharks 1 chub 1 scamp grouper
The rowlett Fire Department group of 10 had red snapper limits to 17#. The group was headed up by David Moore. Erich Wahlberg(Garland) had the 17# red snapper. Aaron Hardin, (Texas City) had a red snapper limit to 6# and the rainbow runner. Colby Smith (Greenville), red snapper limit to 6#. Mike Richardson(Corinth) with a red snapper limit to 10#. Rob Richardson(Athens) had the 30# ling, the bonito and a red snapper limit to 12#.
These red snapper limits, or any red snapper, for that matter, won't last much longer in 2009, as there's only 14 more days remaining for the red snapper fishery in Federal waters to be open...August 14th is the last day. The closure will be in the area of 10-1/2 months -- that's IF it reopens June 1 as it did this year. Who knows what the "Powers that be" will decide. Make the call or come by the Capt. John office at Galveston's Pier 19 to make your reservations. Obviously, do it soon. The office phones will ring if you punch up either 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. Hesitation will get you at least a 10-1/2 month wait for next year's possibilities. Patrick

Capt. Johnny Williams was again at the wheel of the partyboat Capt John. Shortly after leaving Galveston's Pier 19 with 61 fishermen aboard, the offshore run through a still bumpy Gulf began. Sixty miles after passing the end of Galveston's south jetty, fishing began over a different set of rock formaions than on Wednesday's trip.
Today's squid and sardine bait offerings helped bring this catch over the rails and into the iced fish boxes:
122 red snapper, a boat limit 38 lane snapper 6 vermilion snapper 3 mangrove snapper 1 rainbowrunner 3 kingfish 1 bluefish 3 bluerunner 11 sharpnose shark

With Capt. Johnny Williams at the helm of the partyboat Capt John, the run offshore began under slightly better sea conditions than yesterday.
