The 34 fishermen aboard the partyboat Capt. John were in for a smooth ride today for their day of fishing offshore Galveston. With seas 2 ft. or less, the 45 miles run to the south had them ready to fish at first opportunity. Capt. Tony Langston had them fishing at rocks and a wreck in the area's 100 ft. deep waters where a red snapper limit and other species awaited them. The fishermen's efforts, along with their baits of cut squid or whole Spanish sardines, had this catch going into the fish boxes...

1 kingfish
1 triggerfish
2 ling to 68#
2 lane snapper
68 red snapper, a boat limit which included a really nice 23# sow.

Besides that 23# sow, the rest of the Capt. John's red snapper limit went from 4 to 6#, those two ling, topped by that 68 pounder, was something to talk about, too.

Dan Orsak, West Columbia, with the A & M Galveston Sea Camp group, had a red snapper limit to 6# and the 68# ling. Today was another of those with a really nice "hang" approaching Pier 19, with those two ling and the 23# sow red snapper heading up the show, followed by that red/orange curtain of red snapper...nice.

Make your reservations on the Capt. John - call the Pier 19 office at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. The multi-species catches on the Capt. John could include kingfish, ling, dolphin, Atlantic spadefish, an assortment of snappers, groupers, triggerfish, sharks and occasionally the speedy and flashy wahoo. Obviously, not all of these species are likely to be caught on any single trip, but get on the Capt. John and see what part of those possible species you and your group can come back to Pier 19 with!

Today was red snapper day on the partyboat Capt. John -- not really, but it looked like it could be when looking at today's catch.

Aftr making a run of about 50 miles in a southerly direction through the virtually calm Gulf waters of 2 feet or less, they arrived at the fishing area. Capt. Tony Langston had the 56 fishermen working their baits in 115 feet of water at several rocks and a wreck.

Their squid or Spanish sardine baited circle hooks managed to bring this catch aboard:

2 kingfish
5 Atlantic sharpnose sharks
111 red snapper, many of 6-8# topped off by a nice one of 17#.

David Rodriguez & Robert Fritz, both from Alvin, each had red snapper limits that went from six to eight pounds. Robert also had one of the trip's two kingfish.

Today's catch, which included a near red snapper limit (minus one due to a miscount) really made for a nice looking "hang" as the Capt. John approached the dock at Pier 19. That reddish orange curtain was a beautiful sight, even if it was one short of a limit.

Make your reservations on the Capt. John by calling 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. Don't forget that the red snapper fishery in Federal waters closes August 5. That day will be here before you know it; don't hesitate to make your reservations, who knows what your catch could be made up of.

Today’s fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John was run to an area about 35 miles offshore. Capt. Tony Langston had all 82 fishermen working their baits, consisting mostly of pieces of cut squid, at several production platforms for today’s catch, which was made up of:

1 Atlantic sharpnose shark
1 red snapper
1 ling of 35#
863 Atlantic spadefish

While the Atlantic spadefish total is a big one, the fact is they were what was biting and what the majority of the fishermen were fishing for. Watching them readily take the bait, which is immediately followed by a strong pulling, spinning and line tightening surge makes for a hard to resist fishing experience. Throw in that most of them are swimming 15 ft. or less below the surface just adds to the attraction of presenting a bait to them. As mentioned in the past, Atlantic spadefish are also one of the tastiest fish out there, whether fried, grilled or broiled.

Sam Rosas , Sugarland, along with Atlantic spadefish, had the day’s only red snapper.

To make your reservations aboard the Capt. John to fish for your part of one of these multi-species catches, call our Pier 19 office at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853.

Saturday June 14

Favorable sea conditions of 2-3 ft. were a welcome sight as the partyboat Capt. John headed offshore after passing through the Galveston jetties. The area that Capt. Tony Langston chose for the 75 fishermen aboard to try their baits of cut squid or whole Spanish sardines was at a series of production platforms about 40 miles offshore.

The fishermen’s efforts managed to put this catch on the deck and into the fish boxes:

31 red snapper to 8#
1 mangrove snapper of 8#
1 kingfish
3 Atlantic sharpnose sharks
620 Atlantic spadefish

As was the case yesterday, those highly visible, eager biting, hard pulling and great eating Atlantic spadefish made up the bulk of the catch. For some reason, so far this season, the red snapper have been reluctant biters. This could change at any time on any offshore fishing trip that the “biters” are targeted in an effort to get fish on the boat. Hopefully, the red snapper will soon join the party in greater numbers. If not, these multi-species catches will continue as they have in the past.

The catches recently have included red snapper, kingfish, several Warsaw grouper, dolphin, lane snapper, mangrove snapper, Atlantic sharpnose sharks, amberjack, ling and rainbow runner, in addition to multitudes of Atlantic spadefish. This is truly multi-species fishing. The species taken on any trip depends on various factors such as current, water clarity, water depth, structure, sea conditions and the fishing area itself. Last but not least, the fish have well over 51% of the vote in whether or not they bite.

To make your reservations on the partyboat Capt. John give the office at Galveston’s Pier 19 a call at 713-223-4853 or 409-762-8808. Come aboard and see what multi-species catch you reel in.

With today's sea conditions running from 4-5 feet, old "Bumpy and Breezy" made their presence known. While it wasn't perfect out there, it was definitely fishable. Capt. Tony Langston pointed the twin hulls of the partyboat Capt. John in a southeasterly direction after entering the open Gulf. About 45 miles later, the 77 fishermen were working their baits at a wreck and a pair of production platforms in the area's 70' deep water.

Their baits of whole Spanish sardines and/or pieces of cut squid enticed this catch to join the fishermen on the deck:

48 red snapper to 10#
6 lane snapper
1 Atlantic sharpnose shark
1 kingfish
6 gray triggerfish
511 Atlantic spadefish

Kenny Swanson, Galveston, had a red snapper limit that went to 10# and was taken on pieces of cut squid.

To make your reservations on the partyboat Capt. John, give the office a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. The addition of those tough little fighters, Atlantic spadefish, to the catch is welcomed. Not only do they fight ten times their size, they're great eating, too. Many white meat filets came in today.
