With Capt. Johnny Williams at the helm of the Capt. John again, the twin hulls were pointed in an easterly direction. Fishing production platforms in the same general area as Tuesday, in around 50 ft. of water, the 37 fishermen wound in this catch:

165 Atlantic spadefish
53 blue runner
21 sharpnose shark

Capt. Johnny Williams headed up today's 8 hour offshore fishing trip with 52 fishermen aboard the Capt. John, working their baits at several production platforms around 35 miles east of Galveston in 45 to 50 ft. deep waters. Their catch:

358 Atlantic spadefish
1 Spanish mackerel
42 bluerunner
4 sharpnose shark.

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Capt. Shawn Clark had the 65 fishermen on today's 8 hour offshore trip positioned at several production platforms about 30 miles to the east of Galveston Island. These platforms, in 45 to 55 ft. of water, are now holding numbers of Atlantic spadefish, as shown by yesterday's and today's fishing reports from the Capt. John.

The large number of Atlantic spadefish on each day was taken on small, cut pieces of squid. The remainder, for the most part, was lured into biting with Spanish sardine baits. Today's catch totals are:

448 Atlantic spadefish
17 bluerunner
6 pigfish
7 bonnethead shark
1 flounder
2 mangrove snapper
1 kingfish
1 ling
1 Atlantic sharpnose shark

Today's catch was obviously dominated by those Atlantic spadefish, aka "tiger snapper". Get on the Capt. John for your portion of this numerous, eager-to-bite, hard-pulling and tasty offshore species. Call the Capt. John's office at Galveston's Pier 19, 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853 to make your Capt. John reservations.

Today's eight hour offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John was headed up by Capt. Shawn Clark.

Fishing about thirty miles offshore, the 75 fishermen brought the nearer to shore staple, the Atlantic spadefish, back into the picture. Those docile looking fish have a strike and fight that makes you believe that, if they got up to say 50#, they would be a handfull on any casting tackle. Their other attractions are that the vast majority of the time you see them take the bait. Their firm white meat is on the delicious side. The opportunity to experience their pulling power and great taste happened 753 times on today's trip.

Today's total catch, mostly taken on small pieces of cut squid, the rest on Spanish sardines, consisted of:

753 Atlantic spadefish
5 kingfish
1 lane snapper
7 bonnethead sharks
1 bonito
3 gafftop catfish
5 bluerunner
2 ladyfish

This first 8 hour offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John after the red snapper closure in Federal waters is the start of closer, inshore fishing for a variety of species. Kingfish, ling, dolphin fish and a variety of other snappers, etc., will take up the red snapper lead. Call the Capt. John's office at Galveston's Pier 19 to make your reservations; 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853.

It finally arrived, the close of the red snapper fishery in Federal waters for 2009. The closure crept up and now "Bam", it's here. What a great day of red snapper fishing on the partyboat Capt. John - a red snapper limit for the 83 fishermen which included many of 10 plus pounds, topped off by several in the 18 to 21 pound class.

Capt. Johnny Williams had the 83 fishermen working their sardine and/or squid baits in 140-160 feet of water, about 67 miles offshore, west of the Claypile area. The fishermens efforts and their baits produced this catch:

166 red snapper to 21#, a boat limit
5 kingfish
2 ling
10 Atlantic sharpnose sharks

Cindy Lucia had a red snapper limit to 10#.
Rita Baumann, Texas City, with a red snapper limit to 21#,trip's heaviest.
Steve Saur, Beaumont, red snapper limit to 14# plus a ling
Jim Marigliano, Dallas, red snapper limit to 13#.

The old saying, "Wait until next year", is now a fact for anyone wanting to catch and keep red snapper in Federal waters. The good news is that that the "others" such as kingfish, ling, the groupers, other snappers, dolphin, wahoo, etc. are still out there. Give the Capt. John's office staff a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853 to make the connection to get your trip started. Over the next months, 36 hour trips with tuna, grouper, wahoo, etc. will bring a great fishing opportunity on the Capt. John.
