With calm surface conditions for today's 8 hour trip,Capt. Johnny Williams had the partyboat Capt. John pointed in a SSW direction after passing the end of the South Jetty. Today's target for the 53 fishermen was the general area of the old Buccaneer Field sunken platforms and nearby operating production platforms. These platform pieces are located 25-30 miles offshore in around 70 ft. of water.

Cut squid and whole Spanish sardine baits fished through the water column, along with the fishermen's efforts, produced this catch:

503 Atlantic spadefish
6 mangrove snapper
23 lane snapper
1 stingray
1 Atlantic sharpnose shark

1 bluerunner

This eight hour offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt. John was run again, with third generation owner, Capt. Johnny Williams in the driver's seat. The area fished was at the reliable old buccaneer production platform remains, in 70 ft. of water. Besides the manmade reef pieces, a nearby active production platform was also fished. The Buccaneer field area is about 27 miles to the SSW after turning the end of the South Jetty.

Using the old reliable baits, pieces of cut squid and/or whole Spanish sardines, the 77 fishermen reeled in this catch:

510 Atlantic spadefish
23 Lane snapper
6 mangrove snapper to 7#
1 Atlantic sharpnose shark
1 rainbow runner
1 blue runner

Jim Marigliano, Dallas, had 5 Atlantic spadefish along with 3 mangrove snapper to 7# on lightly weighted Carolina rigged Spanish sardines, or pieces of cut squid.

Once again, those eager to bite, hard-pulling and great eating Atlantic spadefish dominated this multi-species catch. To make your reservation on one or more of these 8 hour trips by the partyboat Capt. John, give the Pier 19 office a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853.

Today's 12 hour offshore fishing trip was a charter by a group from HOLLOMAN CORP., headquartered in Odessa. Jerry Goodson headed up those 41 fishermen who were from various cities and towns to the north and northwest of Houston.

At the wheel of the partyboat Capt. John was Capt. Johnny Williams, third generation owner of Williams Party Boats. Also joining the Holloman fishermen were Jim Marigliano and me, Patrick Lemire. What a pleasure it was for the three of us, working and fishing with this fine group of individuals.

The areas chosen by Capt. Williams for the day's fishing was the general area of the old Buccaneer production platforms, submerged reef pieces and a couple of active production platforms. These manmade reef structures are about 27 miles SSW of the end of Galveston's South Jetty. The other areas fished were a couple of pieces of the V.A. Fogg wreck, 18 miles farther out in 100 ft. of water.

While the water and seas were in good shape, the weather had a few question marks. Those questions were primarily for Capt. Williams to answer...how to dodge the somewhat numerous squalls in those fishing areas. That question was effectively answered as we passed through a couple of squalls, dodged a few more and fished in just a bit of rain.

During the course of the day, several red snapper in the 11-14# range were caught and released. They came from something above the mid depths and didn't require venting before being released to fight another day. Today's total catch was dominated by the Atlantic spadefish numbers. These eager biters, hard fighters and great eaters will be a catch mainstay for the rest of the summer, or so it seems. As far as being hard fighters -- if they could grow to say 30#, they would rank as one of the hardest fighters in our offshore waters.

Today's total multi-species catch for the boat, taken on pieces of cut squid or whole Spanish sardines, was made up of the following:

6 mangrove snappers to 9#
14 lane snapper
2 vermilion snapper
3 ruby lipped grunt
16 gray griggerfish
3 blue runner
312 Atlantic spadefish

What a pleasure it was to visit and fish with this charter group that consisted of a few fishermen and fewer that had been offshore. The fact is that this type of recreational gathering by a company group is an excellent experience for them. Many in the group voiced their opinion of how much they enjoyed the day offshore on the Capt. John, and that they are eager to go again. One of the ladies even wished that the trip would have been longer, when the trip back to Pier 19 began...the excitement and enjoyment of offshore partyboat fishing on the Capt. John is infectious in a good way.

To make your reservations for one of the Capt. John's regularly scheduled 8 hour offshore trips, a 36 hour tuna safari or for a company or group day charter, give the office at Pier 19 a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853. Make the call today, for yourself, family or company. Your part of one of these multi-species catches is right now swimming out there, waiting for you to drop a line. You might even run across some of the Holloman group on the Capt. John!
