This 8 hour offshore fishing trip by the partyboat Capt John had Capt. Shawn Clark at the helm. The fishing area he selected for today was several production platforms about 35 miles east of Galveston.

The 83 fishermen worked their baits of cut squid or Spanish sardines throughout the 50-60 ft. water column with these results:

390 Atlantic spadefish
2 mangrove snapper
61 bonnethead sharks
1 kingfish
32 Atlantic sharpnose sharks
1 ling of 35#
1 sheapshead
1 black drum

These 8 hour offshore trips are a more relaxed fishing situation than the normal 12 hour trips that are run throughout the summer. The cooler temperatures make the fishing easier, too. The catch totals from this general area have recently been dominated by the eager-to-bite and delicious Atlantic spadefish. To make your reservations, call either 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853.

This was one of those 15 hour offshore trips that's occasionally run by the partyboat Capt. John. Leaving Galveston's Pier 19 around 4:45 Saturday morning, the offshore run began. With the two required captains aboard, Capt. Johnny Williams & Capt. Shawn Clark, we headed out through the calm Gulf.

First stop was about 70 miles SSW of The Island in 180 ft. of water. Three stops were made in that general area, where the 72 of us fishermen wound in an assortment of species consisting mostly of vermilion snapper. Other stops at a production platform and a sunken rig continued the catch results from the first stop.

Trip's total catch, which came on pieces of cut squid or whole or cut Spanish sardines along with a variety of artificials, was made up of:

294 vermilion snapper to 4#
6 lane snapper
4 mangrove snapper
3 triggerfish
1 creolefish
2 amberjack
21 bluerunner
1 kingfish
2 bonito
21 tomtate
1 Atlantic sharpnose shark
1 scamp grouper
1 rockhind grouper
1 Warsaw grouper

Danon Verdun, LaMarque,18 vermilion snapper
Dennis Williams, LaMarque,6 vermilion snapper.
Lee Bull, Conroe, 15 vermilion snapper on "fish skin" bait strips.
Tony Morris, Pearland, 16 vermilion snapper, an amberjack, a bonito. His catch came on squid pieces and butterfly type "speed jigs"
Patrick Lemire, Texas City, my 16 vermilion snapper, 2 triggerfish and an estimated 30# ling that was lost at boatside all ate an assortment of "Gulp" baits.

Today's catch didn't have the expected numbers of kingfish but the vermilion were there in good numbers along with various other species. Red snapper were also taken at some of the early stops in spite of trying to avoid them. They were vented as necessary and all released.

Other extended length trips by the Capt. John, both 15 hour and 36 hour, will be scheduled soon. This coming weekend, Sept. 12 & 13, there is a 36 hour tuna safari. Some spaces are still open -- give the office a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853 to reserve your spot on this 36 hour trip or one of the 8 hour offshore trips.

Today, Capt. Shawn Clark took the Capt. John on its 8 hour offshore fishing trip. The target area he chose for the 81 fishermen was those "fisherman friendly" production platforms about 30 miles to the east of Galveston.

Their baits of cut squid, cut or whole Spanish sardines, mostly worked at or near the bottom in the 50 ft. water, produced this catch:

441 Atlantic spadefish
5 mangrove snapper
2 lane snapper
1 blue runner
3 gaugauganche
1 gray triggerfish
18 sharpnose sharks
16 bonnethead sharks

With 37 fishermen aboard the partyboat Capt. John, Capt. Johnny Williams headed in an easterly direction after passing thru the Galveston Jetties. Their destination on this 8 hour offshore fishing trip was to the numerous production platforms about 30 miles out in 45 to 55 ft. of water. Their baits of cut squid or Spanish sardines helped produce this catch:

521 Atlantic spadefish
11 lane snapper
3 mangrove snapper
1 Gray triggerfish
1 stingray

At $60 per fisherman, with rod, reel, bait and tackle included, these 8 hour offshore fishing trips are a bargain. Besides summer regulars that are still out there, closer in Atlantic spadefish really come to the front on these trips. They strike readily, pull hard and have tasty white fillets. Give the Capt. John office a call at 409-762-8808 or 713-223-4853 to make your reservations.
